The Mounties are checking to see if organized crime planted false information to prompt a massive search for stowaways on a container ship that came to Halifax this month.
Because, of course, increased port security is exactly what organized crime wants.
Perhaps my skepticism is unfair. I might be hung up on the date the ship departed from Lisbon – April 1st. Or maybe I’m over-conscious of a subtext that developed early in the story, which showed politicians spinning this to get credit for improving port security.
I don’t think officials need to be embarrassed about this. Given a reliable tip, Canada Border Services should have followed up on it. To do so would have been irresponsible. Criticism should instead be directed at journalists who inflated rumours into headline news, and politicians who sought to turn the discovery of stowaways into an opportunity to grandstand but are now occupied with saving face.
